- The society for towns was established on 21 April 1803.
- It operated in Polish lands under Prussian rule, not in an independent Polish state.
- Insurance records included contributions, compensation and building descriptions.
In 1803, a Fire Insurance Society for towns was established in South Prussia, with directorates in Poznań and Warsaw. This is how the inventory of the Insurance Directorate in Warsaw held by the State Archive in Kielce describes its origins. A separate society for villages followed a year later. It was therefore not one institution immediately covering all Polish lands and all types of property.
The idea was practical: collect funds for the consequences of a fire before it happens. Contributions followed by compensation offered a different kind of help from a collection organised only after a disaster. Insurance did not prevent a building from catching fire, but was intended to help cover the resulting loss.
Archival materials show how important descriptions of insured property were. Records of contributions and compensation, inventories and valuations of buildings, and building plans survive. The Poznań society's records mention files for individual properties. An insured house thus also became an object of documentation.
Above all, this story illustrates a change in financing losses: preparing shared protection before an event rather than seeking all assistance only after a fire.
For a modern loss, the insurance terms and incident documentation matter. PGW receives compensation enquiries and establishes the possible scope of assistance. Explore assistance with property damage.
